I couldn't clear PT the 2nd time (Pub.Ad.). I'm losing my confidence whether I'll be able to cross this barrier. usually ppl clear it the 2nd time.Plz guide.

    Please do not be disheartened.
It's not about the number of attempts.
It is about putting in requisite amount of hard work and determination. There are many people who do not qualify Pre even after 4 attempts.

Instead of being disheartened, start analysing as to what went wrong and start fixing it.

  4. hello shubra mam!!
i've read abot u in so many places that i found my self in same boat as u were in two year back.i am a doctor in aiims with the age of 27-28 yrs.The thing is i too wanna serve bigger mass in a more worth-it way than serving the small crowd of the hospital.
so my inquiry is that...since i hv left only two attempt(of 10 nd 11) for this IAS exam....nd i dont wanna take my option "medical science"...so wd u mind to share ur personal experiences and strategy between the time "when this worm of IAS was taking birth in ur mind to becoming a officially claimed socio-philic creature??
one more thing."shd i do the job in between preparation or not??

  7. Shubhra Mam,
I cleared Prelims by self study. I have difficulity in GS paper 2 in " India's economic interaction with world"
Should I join some crash course for that as I have not attended coaching so far.
Please suggest me material for self study.
Also for Pub Ad I am looking forward to your classes.
    Thanks in advance.

    Congratulations

For economics, If you can get notes of any good coaching inst for GS-economics, first do that. After that, try to go through all WTO negotiations, India's new initiatives in Foreign trade, recession and so on. You can consult Pratiyogita Darpan(eco), Internet, any current affairs magazine for these.

  11. Hello Shubhra Ma'm ,

I gave the PT this year and failed. I was pretty confident that I would get through as my scores when I counted were 77 correct(after deducting the negative ones) in Pub Ad and 61 correct (after deducting the negative)in GS. I was told that I would get through but I guess there was some mistake the way I counted my marks.

Now I am completely out of focus, where to start from . I am again planning to appear in 2010. I am aiming for higher marks in Pub Ad, but I have started to become scared of GS :-0. Please let me know what must I do for GS especially economy and international relation. Which magazines are good ?

  12. Hello Shubhra Ma'am,

I gave the prelims this time. My scores (when I counted on my own) for Pub: 192(after negative) and GS(61). But I failed, so I understood that these are very low scores. My other optional is Sociology.

I went through most of your blog and understood that I must refer to Ignou material for basics. I was studying Fadia&Fadia for my Prelims for 2009.

For 2010- I want to increase my Pub Ad score to about 220-230. Will that help in getting through. Could you please tell me a good book which will help me achieve it ? Also for GS I want to touch 70. Could you please tell me what are good books for economics and International relations as I don not have knowledge of even the basics. I read the NCERT 11th and 12 for Economics, but as I understand that did not suffice. I will start following the newspaper , but for the events (economic and diplomatic) that had already happened, what is a good source to gain information on them ?

Thanks in advance. I would be having many questions in my preparation :-) Hoping to see suggestions from you.

    Well done! Congratulations!
These books will suffice. Just remember the past year questions, specially the last 2 year questions. The questions have turned very general and open ended. Try to keep current perspective always in mind.

And please do not ignore GS, specially since now the pattern of paper has changed to much lengthier paper as compared to 2007. work on writing fast.

For prelims I have given sources in a separate post.

For GS-economics, you should consult pratiyogita Darpan eco spl. That wud help you a lot. Also consult a current affairs magazine for being updated.

And remember, do not be disheartened. Success is just around the corner.

  16. Aman,

    congratulations!

Try to do a bit of everything. As you have less time, focus on the areas which are not yet done, GS paper 2 is a good idea. Also try to do physics paper 2. Try to write a few answers instead of a hwole test series on any subject as that will take a lot of time and will give less returns. Right now your agenda should be to finish max syllabus and some writing practice.

    All the very best!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. You need to start with what development requires, why bureaucracy is not suitable for development adm(its criticisms, its nature), then conclude with what all changes are required to convert bureaucracy to developmental bureaucracy.

    A. you will need to give the current scenario of the topic under question. also the past and current govt schemes, ur pespective is also imp but it has to be in line with general thinking pattern. For eg you can't say that Child labour is good for children.

    2. after completing basic books in pub ad...i feel something is missing..may be as you told in some previous posts that if questions are vague then we should end it with current scenario...but i m confused how to prepare for that....

  40. Hi Ma'am ,
disturbing you once again,i like to know further tha in question like " do you agree...","Do you think....","Whether you support.....",one should bgin with "i agree",i support.." in the introduction
    or
Let the answer provide arguments and let reader infer from it that writer is in suppot/oppose(without explictly saying it)
    or
    conclude in the conclusion as " thus I agree...","Thus I support.... ".

    A. If it pertains to executive responsibility to legislature(which most probably it looks like), it means that in India, the executive is always acocuntable to the legislature. A no confidence motion can remove the executive any day. But in a presidential system the executive is not accountable in this sense. He doesn't have to look for the approval of legislature to stay in office.

If this topic is anything diff, you will have to give me the exact details, as right now I do not have nay books with me, so I can't chek this page in DD basu.

I have taken Pub Ad as 2nd optional and want your valuable suggestions on following :

    1) Would it be good idea to leave the job now?

    2) Since,I don't have gr8 expectations from this year's mains, I also plan to join V&R for GS and Mohanty for Pub Ad for next year's preparations. So can you tell if it is a good idea to join coaching classes in general as they have been suggested by some of my seniors?

    3) I have also heard some criticism about quality of coaching classes in Delhi and am more confused now as the career might go for a toss, if coaching does not deliver as per expectations. I don't want to depend wholly on them but I expect them to make things look simpler and clearer.

For this year mains, you can take leave and prepare.

For Pub Ad, Synergy/ Mohanty is a waste of money and times.
For GS, Vajiram is good in Polity, Econmics only. Rest of the stuff when I was a student there, was nopt good. So make your decison based on all the info.

Can u suggest me some material that i can do in this period as reading so many books may not be possible right now. i was thinking of studying Mohanty notes if time permits.

    ReplyDelete
  58. My following questions are with addition to last question, where I queried abt leaving some selective topics fully in PubAd:

    1. I want to give one example of "Leadership" from Administrative behavior. Last question from this question was asked in 1990. So, would it be wise to leave it all together?

    2. Two 60 markers have been asked on "morale" in last 5-6 years. I didn't find its mention in any of the books or IGNOU materials. These kind of things discourages to leave topics.

  69. Hello Shubra, I am Naveen, need your help through this blog, for aspirants who have economics as optional. If you know someone who can provide brief light on the paper that would suffice.

As syllabus has completely changed as well as the approach. Though that is the case with each optionals, still matter more here!

So if you can do this I am really grateful.

    Thanks,
    Naveen

  77. Hi Shubhra mam,

My query is regarding answer writing for pubAd.

You have suggested, one powerful point a para for long answers. Should it be the point of analysis or some example or theorists view with name. Also should I underline the whole sentence of analysis, or just terms and scholar's name.

I am inclined towards analysis, but Mohanty's test evaluators prefer terms and names. What did you do?

    Thanks!

  78. hi shubra

i have read bipin chandra (modern india) twice and have compiled notes (synoptic) now looking at the questions trend in history and the time left ( i can give maximum 6-7 days for histry) what do you suggest the best way to revise history...
a.) read bipin chndra again this time mains oriented
b.)read synoptics notes n prepare answers frm previous papers
c.) look for other comprehend source may be 90-100 pgs of spectrum
    any thoughts?

    A. It would depend on the demand of the question. Be flexible about it.

Do not underline entire sentences. Only the important stuff.

I am inclined towards analysis, but Mohanty's test evaluators prefer terms and names. What did you do?

    A. Analysis holds more value...but you can't ignore the theretical dimensions of the answer.

I would be appearing for mains with Pub Adm. During my preparation I had written few answers. Now with few days left, should this time be devoted to ansmwer writing or learning the notes that I have prepared. I dont know wheather this happens with every one, but I tend to forget things very often. That is why I want to spent this time learning.

  81. hi shubhra,

b4 prelims for gs paper2 i didnt do a lot...the prblm was lack of avlblty of concrete material and ofcourse time...my status of prep is:

indian eco. : done from vajiran handwritten notes
    world orgnizatons: spectrum (50% covered)
    stats: can handle them easily
international relations, bilateral issues etc.: will read from this yr ALS notes (left a week for it)
S&T : dont know from where to study

theonly confidence i have is i m reading hindu n monthly magzines continsly (for IR and bilateral) and m from an engineering backgrnd (so can handle s&t)
Can u plz suggest me the strategy for gs paper 2 to maximize the o/p?

    ReplyDelete
  82. @Dhakad Banna
practice stats well. Also s&t needs to be mastered. rest of the stuff is more or less dynamic.

  86. hi shubra
    i have some querries..
    1. i have started giving pub ad , GS mocks but the problem is dont know how to evaluate them....actually i have no idea how marking is done...my basic question is if i write the answer in a way which contains almost all the important points related to the topic along with a decent conclusion...i.e. simple answer ( may be bookish language as if mohit bahttacharya himself is writing :P) with nothing fundoo....then how much a person can expect ?...i know its vague but if u can understnd my point plz answer.

    2. word limit....what is it for 60 marks answer...u see for 20 marks a person writes 200 words then unitary method says for 60 write 600 words...but i was able to write somewhere between 350-400....again nothing fundoo just the basic stuffs + tried to give it some present relevance like talking about NREGA RTI NRHM....any suggestions?
whatz the basic thing that differentiate a 60 marks and a 20 marks answer?

3.whatz the standard length of an essay...in terms of word limit?

    regards
    aman

    ReplyDelete
  87. @dhakad
    1. yes..simple and will suffice
    2.no word limit for 6 marker...avg words- 500-650
3.no word limit.... avg limit - 1000-1500 words

  92. hi..my question is for 20 marks answer we are supposed to write 200 words thus logically for 60 it should be around 600 thus summing it all it makes 3000 words in 3 hrs...which is proving a daunting task for me when i gave mock tests...today i waz nt able to attend one 30 marks question due to paucity of time.....where is the problem....what best shud i do...to atleast attempt all...by reducing 60 markers length or the prblm is with my writing speed and evrone else in this world can write 3000 words in 3 hrs comfortably !

    ReplyDelete
  93. @dhakad banna
do not be disheartened. But yes, on an avg 3000 words is the usual trend. Try writing a little faster.

    @Krest
Yes you can take suppl. sheets.

  97. Good afternoon shubra mam

i had studied geography in als few months back and bout the book written by u on pub administration coz its precise. needed precise book as this is my first and last chance as was not able to leave job earlier. i have done well in pre and i want guidance in following things

    1. i dont hav much time so thinking of not attending classes of mohanty sir for pub adm and getting voice recording of classes and hand written notes from a friend. would it work? as i heard that any ways he does not comples syllabus on time n i hav less time

    2. i saw u recommending IGNOU notes for quality answers. i though believe tht readin 1 thing 10 times is better than readin 10 things 1 time. i hav decided to read mohanty notes n ur written precise bub ad. how should i go for managing frutfully class notes, ur book and ignou notes
