hi maam,i am not able to scoregood marks in psychology in mains,i know why?i am too from eng background. Please tell me from where one can get those reserch studies required in every question and how to rememder them. Also how to incorporate them in answers AND how to answer pych questions.Lots of questions,i know, but take ur time.
plz go thru the entire blog n comments. You will find most answers. Also it would be helpful to you too if you could post questions in the right post. Thanks
HEllo mam, hope u will b fine ..I m again here with a small query regarding India Year Book (Published by Government of India)I wan to ask that while reading this book which things i have to keep in my mind, I mean On which topics i should more concentrate...how the questions are asked from this book(It will be good if u can give 1 or 2 sample questions)...Nd this book is more important for Prelims or mainsToo much numbers and data is given in d book,i dont think They will ever ask the questions in too much depth....What u say? ThanxRoohi.
To set an example, I will not answer your query here.
i m sorry for this..
I don’t understand why people are asking questions without reading entire blog. You know if you guys don’t have patience to read a usefully blog completely then you should not ask any questions also.I am following this blog since 1 month & I know many of my friends who are following the blog from the day it started, but we don’t ask questions because whatever questions comes to our mind already exist in some or other way.So it’s a request to all of you, please follow some protocols provided in one of the blogs http://shubhra-saxena.blogspot.com/2009/06/some-guidelines.html . Summary of the guideline is:1. Visit the entire blog & then ask a question if it does not exist.2. Ask questions in a proper section(This will help others to follow the blog)3. If a question belongs to general category please don’t ask in irrelevant section4. Please have clarity in your questions(it really helps the person who is answering)5. Don’t ask questions related to subjects other than GS, Public administration & PsychologyNOTE: I am an internet freak & I have gone through many blogs & websites related to UPSC, but Shubhra’s blog is the only blog which provides complete details about the preparation & psychology of the exam. And the best part is she is replying to all of your queries in the best way she can, so please make best use of these & crack the exam. All the Best!
Mr.Kshitij Diwan i am also following this blog since der were only 2 post created by mam..I have also clear many queries just by reading other ppl's question and the answer given by mam....I dont like to waste my as well as mam's time and energy ....But this time i have thought mam has made another forum for discussion dats why i had asked the question here...I m sorry if u ppl had to face inconvenience..
Dear Shubhra,I would like to know how you used to deal with the problem of fatigue. After studying for 3-4 hrs, I usually take an afternoon nap. But I don't know if I'm doing the right thing. Please suggest. Thanks.Regards,Twinkle
@Roohi My comments were not at all personal. It was a general comment Posted for all.I posted it in this blog because the blog will definitely get everyone’s attention (Hello All!)Anyways I am extremely sorry if I hurt your feelings.
@twinkleif you are fatigued, you can't study well. So it's a good idea to take breaks. With time your capability to study longer will increase.
Ok Mam. We will be waiting patiently
madam can u help us by listing the important topics for PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AND GENERAL STUDIES(ESPECIALLY S&T).RegardsK.Rajesh
Listing s and t topics would be gud. not the main topics but anything other than the staple. thanks in advance.
hi M'am,first of heartiest congrats for your wonderful result in CSE..i am dubious about the kind of back-up i should keep for my career!!i did my B-Tech from DCE,delhi in electronics and communication.shall i focus on securing a back-up or just concentrate on my studies regarding UPSC?regards,Goresh
A back-up is always a good idea given the fact that it's a competitive exam of long duration.
The best idea I can suggest you for s&t topics is:look at the last 10 years mains questions, they will show that majority of questions have been asked from about 15-20 topics.eg. India's space progm, GSLV,PSLVNanotchnologyGlobal warmingOzone depletionWeapon prog of India Select the areas and prapare them.
Hello Mam,I have a small issue eating away my brain.Actually I have completed my masters and presently I am in US still searching for a job.I expressed my intentions to prepare for civils with my sister and brotehr-in-law.But my brother-in-law outrightly said to drop the plan and stay back in US and try for a software job.The reason he gave for asking me to drop Civils Plan was that one has to have a plan of civils right from the first year of their bachelors.Thats the reason he was asking me to drop the idea.He may be right but as far as my knowledge it`s not the case of every one .Its not just that the market thats driving me back to India.Somehow I didn`t find anything interesting in US right from the first day I have landed in US.Please give me your opinion on his words regarding the plan of Civils in first year of Bachelors.Did you had the plans in your first year of bachelors and prepared to civils from then?Awaiting your reply.Thank You very much Mam.
Chintu,It's not important to plan civils prep from 1st year of graduation. I thought about it after working in IT industry for 4.5 years. Before that, I never thought of preparing. This blog and other students on this blog will definitely help you in your preparation.
Thank You very much Mam.I am really very thank ful to you.I cant explain my feelings when I read your reply as I felt completely disheartened by my brother-in-laws comments. This blog is really doing an awesome job.Thank You very much Mam.
@ Chintu Even i was asked to drop the idea to go for Civil Services preparation by my one of the brothers and others forcefully, but i went on my own way. i completed my graduation B.Sc. comp. Sc. from Osmania Univ. Hyderabad 2006. and am doing job since 3 Years, presently i am working in Bhuj, Gujarat and have started preparation along with the job, This blog site is helping a lot especially Shubhra Madam and am satisfied here.hope this encourage uThanksPratap
Madam, i decided to write the civil services exams in hindi medium because of my mother tongue and upto 12th my medium was hindi only Graduation was in English medium, my English is OK but i can write and express well in main in Hindi medium than English if i start doing practice i can do well in English also.Madam, shuold i think for Enlish medium ? is Enlish medium scores good than any other languages?hope to get a proper guidance on thisThanking you,Pratap
@PratapI don't think medium matters. If you see this year's results, Ms. Kiran Kaushal(AIR-3) has qualified with Hindi Medium and I am not sure but I think Mr. Varinder sharma(AIR-4) has qualified with Punjabi medium. So medium should not matter at all.
Dear Ms. SaxenaCould you please suggest any books for GS prep and the strategy you adopted for the same.Merci!Amrapali
There are older posts that will help you out
hey Pratap,Thak You very mcuh for your reply ..Even I am from Hyderabad...Can we please communicate with each other. My email ID is email@example.com.Kindly Please send me your details so that i can have further guidance from you..Thanks a lot......

Dear Madam, I am Manjunath from Bangalore.I wanted to know regading the answer script dimensions, which UPSC provides for mains. Can you please throw some light on this, so that it will help us in practicing for mains exam.Regards,Manju

I have been blogging on Current Affairs for more than a year now.Do visit my blog at www.GsCurrentAffairs.Blogspot.com Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.orgThanks and regards,Naga
Hi Shubra. Can u guide us about revision and the timelines u followed for that. When did u start revising or did u do it periodically? Covering of whole syllabus is more important or covering of maximum syllabus and consolidation with more revisions?
Hello Ma'm. Remarkable work on your language. It shows the depth of effort you have put in. Amongst the sea of ppl admiring you this is my take.Could you pl suggest me the source material for Personnel admin. Sharma and Sadana seems totally boring. And how to go about this topic as it seems very general to me.

Dear MamAgain I m Jeba from Tamilnadu, I have one doubt, there is a rumour about the cancellation of optionals in prelims & main.Is it possible ? Do you have any idea on that, kindly inform meThanks & RegardsJ.Jeba
@JebaNo idea. And I would suggest that instead of focussing on rumours, you try to study. These kind of rumours are always floating around in this exam's preparation. Even if that has to happen, I think UPSC would give enuf grace period for aspirants to be prepared for it.
removing optionals in prelims is only 2nd ARC's recommendation along with many ! but will not be implemented soon. For details of the recommendations one can refer ARC's website
Dear MamI have read your note taking tips , Can u plz tell me is prelims too require note taking or mains only. If it requires how to take notes for prelims ?Thanks & RegardsJ.Jeba
@jjjoselinplease post queries in relevant thread.
Dear Ma'am,Regarding tests series, when's d ideal time to opt 4 them? am preparing 4 next yr, but i've applied 4 them now. but as i havent completed d syllabus, i'm confused whether 2 take d tests in exam conditions or solve them as an exercise. plz help.
mam, should i make notes and then memorize or should i take notes ,right relavant answer and then memorize?
how many hours does one to study on daily basis?is one day off in a week recommended mamregards mano
Dear Ma'am,First of all thanks a lot for taking the trouble to assist the IAS aspirants. I do have a query about 'Evaluative Questions'. For instance in psychology, if we were to evaluate different perspectives for a 20 marker, is it necessary to describe the perspectives as well or do we just start off with the evaluation. Thanks a tonKayina
@ManoPlease develop your style of studies on your own. There is no cut and dried method that I can suggest to you.
@twinklewhich test series, prelims or mains/
In evaluative questions, you have to give positives, negatives and then conclude.
Describe a theory only when it says "Describe the theory". In evaluative questions, you hav eto write a summation of the theory first and then start evaluation.
Dear Ma'am,Sry i din mention d test series in d prev. post. i wanted to know abt d mains test series.Regarding tests series, when's d ideal time to opt 4 them? am preparing 4 next yr, but i've applied 4 them now. but as i havent completed d syllabus, i'm confused whether 2 take d tests in exam conditions or solve them as an exercise. plz help.Regards, twinkle
ma'am, plz help to understand the difference between evaluation and critical analysis of a theory/statement.Also is critical appraisal, critical evaluation and critical analysis all different or same.
@TwinkleThe testseries is more useful only when you have finished the syllabus on which you are taking the test.
Evaluation and critically analyse etc. arre almost the same. You have to give positives, negatives and then a conclusion based on the generally held opinion.
Hello mam i have doubt for few topics regarding from where to study them 1 Morale 2 Organization structure(Boards, commissions, etc) 3 in OB in topics like motivation, leadership many theories are given contemporary portion should i study all of them or focus on imp ones
Morale-sharma sadanaI didn't study these topics. In OB, theories like Maslow, Herzberg are the traditional ones. Other than them you should also study Porter lawler, Vroom's expectancy theory, equity theory, attribution theory etc.
Hello ma'am,First of all ,many congratulations! I am Saket, B.Tech 2nd Year from IIT R. Recently , only , I found your reply on one of the threads at orkut of IIT R and the link to this blog of yours.Seriously ma'am,it really brings a sense of great pride to have one of our alumni as IAS topper... many congratulations from me.And its really further inspiring of you to start of with such a novel blog to help others.Ma'am,meanwhile, just I thought that you would be the exactly right person to guide me through a doubt of mine which has been brewing in my mind since past one year. Actually , ma'am , I come from a modest background and have always aspired of doing something good to my society...and given that its my priority even over personal comforts, gains, fame etc.I am pursuing Computer Sci. & most of my well wishers suggest me that I make a career in this discipline and try to help society thru monetary or whichever means at a later stage , as against go for civil services which is as per common word of mouth opinion is not welcoming for sincere and dedicated officers, leading to possibly lesser job satisfactions.Ma'am, is it really true? Because, for an IT guy to choose civil services would mean an irreversible choice, staking his entire professional qualifications..Ma'am ,as you have closely perceived both aspects of - working in an IT-company and then finally joining civil services, I look up to you for your kind advice. Regards,Saket
@SaketI haven't yet joined the srvices, so can't predict how easy or difficult it's going to be for me.And it is definitely possible to serve the country in a different capacity than as a civil servant. But it becomes possible to serve a larger community and on a geeater scale through the medium of civil services. You will have to clarify your priorities yourself. Even if I suggest you to pursue a career in IT/computers or otherwise, you will have to discover the answer to this dilemma yourself. All the best!

@avinashI am not aware of any good coaching inst for GS. Please consult other students regarding the same.
@PuneetGhaiYou can buy the compilation of journals from xerox shop next to vajiram and also from Bersarai Jawahar book shop.
hello mam.thanks a lot mam.mam, please tell me from where i can get the ignou notes and which part of pub. ad. it covers?thanks & regards
If only the IAS toppers before you had exposed the Pub Admn and GS of Vajiram, me and my friends would have done better- atleast saved money ! We are average people who need coaching to improve. But Vajiram made coaching into a disadvantage. Thanks for saving the present and future batches.
mam, should I read the newspaper A-Z or some selective portions.if selective portions then which portions are more relevent for this exam?
Editorial, economy section, international, national.
mamplease tell me about the ignou notes and iipa journal.thanks & regards.
Please go thru the blog. you will get ur answers.
thanks mamand sorry that i have asked the same question twice.
thank you mam for all this guidance.u r sparing ur precious time for us. m sure u ll get a lot of blessings for wht u r doing.
just another query.did u read mag or newspaper articles over and over or just one time?does one need to revise them??
@Johnjust one time. And if I found something useful I used to cut it and keep it in a file.
Ma'am, i come from Banglore. Previous to that i was working in Chennai. In both the places i happened to go to Civil coaching. Now i am in New Delhi(Noida really). I have joined GS classes ( Not the Vajiram which many people are cursing here). I feel there is a world of difference. Here, the standards are so enlightening. So much professionalism. I have nt joined for Pub ad here as many people confirmed to me that self-study is the best and coaching is `a disadvantage' as some one put it. Thanks for saving me Rs.20k. Regards , Ramasundaram
Hello Madam,Can you tell how many pages do we need write in the essay paper (with good content). Since its for 200 marks, I dont have any idea of how long it should be. How long(pages) you had written? Thanks,Manju
the length can be anuything between 1000 to 2500 words. I wrote 1200-1250 words this time.
Hello madam,I am final yr student from IIT Kharagpur preparing for CSE - 2010 and taking Economics as my 2nd optional along with chem as the first one.Can u suggest me about books and study material along with strategy for covering the economics syllabus for mains. Can u also suggest which coaching institutes notes (if any ) will be useful for my prep of economics.Eagerly waiting for your reply,Best Wishes,Sachin Prakash
Please go through the entire blog before posting questions. I have repeatedly said that except pub ad and psychology, I can't help.
Hi Shubhra Ma'm, my last request before you start your classes for PubAd. Please do sth for the people who can't avail of your classes. I/We will be highly thankful to you. Any kind of audio lessons or notes of what you will be covering can help us a lot.Regards.
Hello Shubhra Ma'am,Thank you for replying to my queries. I had one question again, but it is a peculiar one.I had given prelims for 2008 as I said. I did not clear, for which you suggested some strategies for prep in your blog.Ma'am, I am facing the problem now that I have studied the whole syllabus completely I am not able to understand where to start all over again. Every topic I read, it seems that I have already read it and feel complacent about it. Could you suggest some strategy for this to avoid this ?For example, I was reading Delegated legislation, but it feels that I have already read and don't feel like reading it. Please suggest something for overcoming this problem.I did not know the relevant post for this questions and I posted here as I felt this is most appropriate. I hope you wouldn't mind. Thanks in advance, waiting for your reply.Bharat
If you have understood the whole syllabus, start making synoptic notes for mains, and factual notes for prelims. That will keep you going.also start wnswer writing and get ans evaluated by a teacher so that you can get feedback. that will increase ur motivation.
thank you mam for all your guidance. mam,are yojna and kurukshetra important and unavoidable?are they monthly or weekly?and when is the exact time of the year one should buy them.i am preparing for 2010 prelims. pls guide me.i will be very grateful.
if you don't get time to read these 2, just buy yojana. Just keep yojana with you and when you feel like suplementing any topic , just pick the magazine up.I would suggest you to please buy Yojana regularly. It comes monthly. It helps in Essay also.

@NI am really tired of answering this question. Please look up the blog to get your answer.@anishaPlz go thru the post on optional selection. That will help you.
Mam, Will you please reveal your daily routine, while studying for IAS.
Hello ma'am.I am a third year Btech student in IIT-Roorkee.I have never wanted to be in Civil-Services, because I never ever thought about it.Right now also, my knowledge of current affairs in an absolute zero to such an extent, that I know nothing much about Parliament, or Politics, etc etc.. But, I want to explore this area. I want to know about Civil Services. I am trying to explore carreer options, but this Civil Services is a MYSTERIOUS one!!My interests are: I like communicating with people, I like to imagine, I like to speak up, I like to write, and I have started liking reading, and now I have begun to think about current affairs as well...Please tell me this:What questions i must ask myself, before starting out to prepare for Civil Services?I know it is great to be in it, but WHY MUST I CHOSE IT? How can one know if his interest in Civil Services is bonafide, or it is just because being an IAS officer brings a lot of pride and power...Please try to understand what I tried to convey. I am a beginner. I dont want to start up on a journey without knowing why am I doing it.Also, one very important fact:I read your interview, and I was like, CLUELSSS about those extra-ordinary questions pannel asked you.I read AIR-2 topper interview, and I felt like I can never clear IAS EVER EVER !!But is that just a general feeling EVERY aspirant gets before starting? Or is it that I am very very hopeless with my poor knowledge and awareness and aptitude??Please reply !!Regards,Shubham.
@Shubhamyes, this is the general feeling every aspirant gets when they start. First decide why you want to join civil services. Then start your preparation.
I am looking forward for the day when i can become an inspiration to IAS aspirants just like Shubra mam - Vicky
