  3. HEllo mam, hope u will b fine ..I m again here with a small query regarding India Year Book (Published by Government of India)

I wan to ask that while reading this book which things i have to keep in my mind, I mean On which topics i should more concentrate...how the questions are asked from this book(It will be good if u can give 1 or 2 sample questions)...Nd this book is more important for Prelims or mains

Too much numbers and data is given in d book,i dont think They will ever ask the questions in too much depth....What u say?

    Thanx
    Roohi.

  5. I don’t understand why people are asking questions without reading entire blog.
You know if you guys don’t have patience to read a usefully blog completely then you should not ask any questions also.
I am following this blog since 1 month & I know many of my friends who are following the blog from the day it started, but we don’t ask questions because whatever questions comes to our mind already exist in some or other way.
So it’s a request to all of you, please follow some protocols provided in one of the blogs http://shubhra-saxena.blogspot.com/2009/06/some-guidelines.html .
    Summary of the guideline is:
    1. Visit the entire blog & then ask a question if it does not exist.
    2. Ask questions in a proper section(This will help others to follow the blog)
    3. If a question belongs to general category please don’t ask in irrelevant section
    4. Please have clarity in your questions(it really helps the person who is answering)
    5. Don’t ask questions related to subjects other than GS, Public administration & Psychology

    NOTE:
I am an internet freak & I have gone through many blogs & websites related to UPSC, but Shubhra’s blog is the only blog which provides complete details about the preparation & psychology of the exam.
And the best part is she is replying to all of your queries in the best way she can, so please make best use of these & crack the exam.
    All the Best!

  7. Dear Shubhra,

I would like to know how you used to deal with the problem of fatigue. After studying for 3-4 hrs, I usually take an afternoon nap. But I don't know if I'm doing the right thing. Please suggest. Thanks.

My comments were not at all personal.

It was a general comment Posted for all.
I posted it in this blog because the blog will definitely get everyone’s attention (Hello All!)

Anyways I am extremely sorry if I hurt your feelings.

if you are fatigued, you can't study well. So it's a good idea to take breaks. With time your capability to study longer will increase.

  13. hi M'am,
first of heartiest congrats for your wonderful result in CSE..
i am dubious about the kind of back-up i should keep for my career!!
i did my B-Tech from DCE,delhi in electronics and communication.
shall i focus on securing a back-up or just concentrate on my studies regarding UPSC?

    regards,
    Goresh

    ReplyDelete
  14. A back-up is always a good idea given the fact that it's a competitive exam of long duration.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The best idea I can suggest you for s&t topics is:
look at the last 10 years mains questions, they will show that majority of questions have been asked from about 15-20 topics.

    eg. India's space progm, GSLV,PSLV
    Nanotchnology
    Global warming
    Ozone depletion
    Weapon prog of India

Select the areas and prapare them.

  16. Hello Mam,

I have a small issue eating away my brain.Actually I have completed my masters and presently I am in US still searching for a job.I expressed my intentions to prepare for civils with my sister and brotehr-in-law.But my brother-in-law outrightly said to drop the plan and stay back in US and try for a software job.The reason he gave for asking me to drop Civils Plan was that one has to have a plan of civils right from the first year of their bachelors.Thats the reason he was asking me to drop the idea.He may be right but as far as my knowledge it`s not the case of every one .

Its not just that the market thats driving me back to India.Somehow I didn`t find anything
interesting in US right from the first day I have landed in US.

Please give me your opinion on his words regarding the plan of Civils in first year of Bachelors.Did you had the plans in your first year of bachelors and prepared to civils from then?

Awaiting your reply.Thank You very much Mam.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Chintu,

It's not important to plan civils prep from 1st year of graduation. I thought about it after working in IT industry for 4.5 years. Before that, I never thought of preparing.

This blog and other students on this blog will definitely help you in your preparation.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thank You very much Mam.I am really very thank ful to you.I cant explain my feelings when I read your reply as I felt completely disheartened by my brother-in-laws comments. This blog is really doing an awesome job.

    Thank You very much Mam.

Even i was asked to drop the idea to go for Civil Services preparation by my one of the brothers and others forcefully, but i went on my own way. i completed my graduation B.Sc. comp. Sc. from Osmania Univ. Hyderabad 2006. and am doing job since 3 Years, presently i am working in Bhuj, Gujarat and have started preparation along with the job, This blog site is helping a lot especially Shubhra Madam and am satisfied here.

  20. Madam,
i decided to write the civil services exams in hindi medium because of my mother tongue and upto 12th my medium was hindi only Graduation was in English medium, my English is OK but i can write and express well in main in Hindi medium than English if i start doing practice i can do well in English also.Madam, shuold i think for Enlish medium ? is Enlish medium scores good than any other languages?

hope to get a proper guidance on this
    Thanking you,
    Pratap

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Pratap
I don't think medium matters. If you see this year's results, Ms. Kiran Kaushal(AIR-3) has qualified with Hindi Medium and I am not sure but I think Mr. Varinder sharma(AIR-4) has qualified with Punjabi medium. So medium should not matter at all.

Again I m Jeba from Tamilnadu, I have one doubt, there is a rumour about the cancellation of optionals in prelims & main.Is it possible ? Do you have any idea on that, kindly inform me

    Thanks & Regards
    J.Jeba

    ReplyDelete
  42. @Jeba
    No idea.
And I would suggest that instead of focussing on rumours, you try to study. These kind of rumours are always floating around in this exam's preparation. Even if that has to happen, I think UPSC would give enuf grace period for aspirants to be prepared for it.

First of all thanks a lot for taking the trouble to assist the IAS aspirants.
I do have a query about 'Evaluative Questions'. For instance in psychology, if we were to evaluate different perspectives for a 20 marker, is it necessary to describe the perspectives as well or do we just start off with the evaluation.

The testseries is more useful only when you have finished the syllabus on which you are taking the test.

You have to give positives, negatives and then a conclusion based on the generally held opinion.

i have doubt for few topics regarding from where
    to study them
    1 Morale
    2 Organization structure(Boards,commissions,etc)
3 in OB in topics like motivation, leadership many theories are given contemporary portion should i study all of them or focus on imp ones

    ReplyDelete
  59. Morale-sharma sadana
    I didn't study these topics.
In OB, theories like Maslow, Herzberg are the traditional ones. Other than them you should also study Porter lawler, Vroom's expectancy theory, equity theory, attribution theory etc.

  60. Hello ma'am,
    First of all ,many congratulations!
I am Saket, B.Tech 2nd Year from IIT R. Recently , only , I found your reply on one of the threads at orkut of IIT R and the link to this blog of yours.Seriously ma'am,it really brings a sense of great pride to have one of our alumni as IAS topper... many congratulations from me.
And its really further inspiring of you to start of with such a novel blog to help others.

Ma'am,meanwhile, just I thought that you would be the exactly right person to guide me through a doubt of mine which has been brewing in my mind since past one year. Actually , ma'am , I come from a modest background and have always aspired of doing something good to my society...and given that its my priority even over personal comforts, gains, fame etc.

I am pursuing Computer Sci. & most of my well wishers suggest me that I make a career in this discipline and try to help society thru monetary or whichever means at a later stage , as against go for civil services which is as per common word of mouth opinion is not welcoming for sincere and dedicated officers, leading to possibly lesser job satisfactions.

Ma'am, is it really true? Because, for an IT guy to choose civil services would mean an irreversible choice, staking his entire professional qualifications..
Ma'am ,as you have closely perceived both aspects of - working in an IT-company and then finally joining civil services, I look up to you for your kind advice.

    Regards,
    Saket

    ReplyDelete
  61. @Saket
I haven't yet joined the srvices, so can't predict how easy or difficult it's going to be for me.

And it is definitely possible to serve the country in a different capacity than as a civil servant.
But it becomes possible to serve a larger community and on a geeater scale through the medium of civil services.

You will have to clarify your priorities yourself. Even if I suggest you to pursue a career in IT/computers or otherwise, you will have to discover the answer to this dilemma yourself.

  89. Hello Shubhra Ma'am,

Thank you for replying to my queries. I had one question again, but it is a peculiar one.

I had given prelims for 2008 as I said. I did not clear, for which you suggested some strategies for prep in your blog.

Ma'am, I am facing the problem now that I have studied the whole syllabus completely I am not able to understand where to start all over again. Every topic I read, it seems that I have already read it and feel complacent about it. Could you suggest some strategy for this to avoid this ?
For example, I was reading Delegated legislation, but it feels that I have already read and don't feel like reading it. Please suggest something for overcoming this problem.

I did not know the relevant post for this questions and I posted here as I felt this is most appropriate. I hope you wouldn't mind.

Thanks in advance, waiting for your reply.

    Bharat

  90. If you have understood the whole syllabus, start making synoptic notes for mains, and factual notes for prelims. That will keep you going.

  92. if you don't get time to read these 2, just buy yojana. Just keep yojana with you and when you feel like suplementing any topic , just pick the magazine up.

I would suggest you to please buy Yojana regularly. It comes monthly. It helps in Essay also.

  105. Mam,

Will you please reveal your daily routine, while studying for IAS.

  106. Hello ma'am.
I am a third year Btech student in IIT-Roorkee.
I have never wanted to be in Civil-Services, because I never ever thought about it.
Right now also, my knowledge of current affairs in an absolute zero to such an extent, that I know nothing much about Parliament, or Politics, etc etc..
But, I want to explore this area. I want to know about Civil Services. I am trying to explore carreer options, but this Civil Services is a MYSTERIOUS one!!
    My interests are:
I like communicating with people, I like to imagine, I like to speak up, I like to write, and I have started liking reading, and now I have begun to think about current affairs as well...
    Please tell me this:
What questions i must ask myself, before starting out to prepare for Civil Services?
I know it is great to be in it, but WHY MUST I CHOSE IT? How can one know if his interest in Civil Services is bonafide, or it is just because being an IAS officer brings a lot of pride and power...

Please try to understand what I tried to convey. I am a beginner. I dont want to start up on a journey without knowing why am I doing it.
    Also, one very important fact:
I read your interview, and I was like, CLUELSSS about those extra-ordinary questions pannel asked you.
I read AIR-2 topper interview, and I felt like I can never clear IAS EVER EVER !!
But is that just a general feeling EVERY aspirant gets before starting? Or is it that I am very very hopeless with my poor knowledge and awareness and aptitude??
    Please reply !!
    Regards,
    Shubham.

  107. @Shubham
yes, this is the general feeling every aspirant gets when they start. First decide why you want to join civil services. Then start your preparation.
