Psychology Tips

For Psychology, Mr. Mukul Pathak is the only one. I believe almost every student of Psychology in CS preparation avails of his guidance in one form or another. I have immensely benefited from being his student and he is more than just a teacher. He has been a mentor and friend too. I am not suggesting that every student should join his classes. But this is one of the ways I can thank him for his invaluable support and guidance.

Sources:
NCERT 11th & 12th
Baron
Ciccarelli
Mr. Mukul Pathak's class notes.

1.Focus on conceptual understanding.

2.All chapters of paper 1 are extremely important and interlinked. So do not leave any unit.

3.Practice answer writing in the prescribed time limit and try to get them evaluated by someone competent.

4.Make synoptical notes for every topic for easy reference. That helps in the final revision.

5.For paper 2, you need to use some daily life examples and put them in your answer.
Also try to add some theoretical aspects of paper 1.

Thanks.

  9. you can buy notes of pathak sir's from any shop in delhi. Also, please study from Ciccarelli, Baron and NCERTs. Conceptual clarity is a must. I will try to scan sm answers for you.

Daily life examples would be something like:

In Gender psychology, you have a topic called Glass ceiling. Instead of giving examples in US, try to give from your own country.

Compare the % of women in Politics and admn. The see how many women actually are at Chief Secy and Cabinet secy level. Also how many women get imp cabinet ministries. All they get is women and child devt and tourism.

I hope you get the point.

    Thanks.

can you pls tell me the shop where you have bought Mr. Mukul Pathak's notes, in Hyderabad. I initially refrained from buying it, as i thought its illegal and a civil services aspirant should not do that... but its practically not possible ( i love my job in recession :) ) for me to attend the coaching classes and i've read posts of many students of Mr. Pathak, some toppers, publicly suggesting to buy Mukul Pathak sir's notes.... doesn't Mr. Pathak know about it, i guess he does, but i respect him for not restricting aspirants by applying the law

  46. ma'am since u have directed to post psychology questions in Psychology post, im posting these queries again here...

you have advised the aspirants to get the model answers to be evaluated by someone competent. for aspirants who are not into any coaching,

    1. can u please briefly explain the various details/aspects to be found in the answers?
what,in your experience, are the details/aspects expected by the evaluators in an answer?

    2. do the questions from DIFFERENT TOPICS [like personality, learning, memory] require DIFFERENT APPROACHES while answering?
can you, if possible, detailedly explain the various details/aspects to be ensured in the answers for questions from EACH TOPIC.

    thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  47. 1. can u please briefly explain the various details/aspects to be found in the answers?
what,in your experience, are the details/aspects expected by the evaluators in an answer?

First you need to study the demand of the question. Make a framework of the answer. Write an introduction that is relevant to the question. In the body write as many aspects of the answer as possible. Write a conclusion which mirrors the answer buy doesnt repeat the introduction.

    2. do the questions from DIFFERENT TOPICS [like personality, learning, memory] require DIFFERENT APPROACHES while answering?

    A. No, no diff in approach required.

can you, if possible, detailedly explain the various details/aspects to be ensured in the answers for questions from EACH TOPIC.

    A. That's difficult. Can't do that.

    ReplyDelete
  48. few years back [2005], there was a question about "top down and bottom up processing in recognition" in the short notes type question. there was no material abt this topic in MP notes. there were just a few lines in baron.
    -----------------------------------------------
if answer to the above question can be gist of following paras or not(requesting to read all the paras and need ur view)

A top-down approach is essentially breaking down a system to gain insight into its compositional sub-systems. In a top-down approach an overview of the system is first formulated, specifying but not detailing any first-level subsystems. Each subsystem is then refined in yet greater detail, sometimes in many additional subsystem levels, until the entire specification is reduced to base elements
A bottom-up approach is piecing together systems to give rise to grander systems, thus making the original systems sub-systems of the emergent system. In a bottom-up approach the individual base elements of the system are first specified in great detail. These elements are then linked together to form larger subsystems, which then in turn are linked, sometimes in many levels, until a complete top-level system is formed. This strategy often resembles a "seed" model, whereby the beginnings are small but eventually grow in complexity and completeness

The study of visual attention provides an example. If your attention is drawn to a flower in a field, it may be simply that the flower is more visually salient than the surrounding field. The information that caused you to attend to the flower came to you in a bottom-up fashion — your attention was not contingent upon knowledge of the flower; the outside stimulus was sufficient on its own.

Contrast this situation with one in which you are looking for a flower. You have a representation of what you are looking for. When you see the object you are looking for, it is salient. This is an example of the use of top-down information.

In cognitive terms, two thinking approaches are distinguished. "Top down" (or "big chunk") is stereotypically the visionary, or the person who sees the larger picture and overview. Such people focus on the big picture and from that derive the details to support it. "Bottom up" (or "small chunk") cognition is akin to focusing on the detail primarily, rather than the landscape. The expression "seeing the wood for the trees" references the two styles of cognition.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This is not the full explanation of top down and bottom up.

Top down and bottom up processing is also linked with memory and personality attributes. Then there are certain experiments that were conducted. You need to add them as well.

Also it would require some input from learning.
    Part-whole learning -bottom up
    whole -part learning-top down

    ----------

(Explain Bandura's theory using a suitable social learning task. Extend research support to your answer.)

In the above mentioned question what research support can be mentioned or were mentioned by you.

    -------------------------

(Give a comparative account of self as conceived by Adler and Rogers.)
In this answer I first explained self in about 100-150 words ...
totality of individual's experiences, core of personality , subjective and objective etc
Then i wrote that adler is a post freudian whose approach seeks to integrate various approaches and roger's approach is humanistic

Then i briefly explained adlers theory by writing concepts of striving for superiority , style of life and creative power of self(120 words).
Then i explianed roger's notion of self with concepts like tendency for self actualisation, congruence between real and ideal self and unconditional positive regard etc.

in next para i highlighted similarities in both like
    1) emphasis on conscious ability to direct the course of development of our self
    2) ultimate goal being the complete development and fullfilment of self in the concepts of superiority and self actualisation
In next para I explained differences in basic motivational force and the roots of development of self and Roger being positive and adler being conflict-based.

Then i concluded by highlighting their unique importance in psychology in general.

(ARE THEIR MORE POINTS TO THIS ANSWER???...BECAUSE I THINK I DID NOT MENTION ENOUGH NUMBER OF DIFFERNCES AS REQUIRED BY THE QUESTION)

  54. (Give a comparative account of self as conceived by Adler and Rogers.)

your frameworks is good. But a few more point could be written. like Adler's conception of self is a negative one while rogers' is a positive one.

also, adler's self tries to overcome sense of inferiority while rogers' is an innate striving for self actualisation.

also, you digressed from the question in introduction and conclusion. you need to remember the question at all times.

Can you please suggest as to how the mains answers for pyschology should be.

Eg: Differentiate between iconic and echoic memory.

I was not able to answer it for 20 marks question as there are not many differences that i can point out.

Can you please tell me how i should go about answering such questions.

    ReplyDelete
  63. If you go through Mr Pathak's notes, you will find this stuff in Memory chapter. Last year this part was separately added, so you can also find this in new notes that Mr Pathak gave for new syllabus separately.

I did not answer this question as it is very straight. Not much to analyze. Plus, I felt that everyone would be writing what I would write. So not much scope for scoring.

  78. Ma'am,
Q1. can wwe write shorter answers for 60 marks if we cannot think of more stuff relevant to the question? Will it be better than writing stuff that's only remotely relevant to the question?
Q2. From where should I attempt questions?
Q3. How do we judge the relative weightage of various parts of a question? How many words to be written for each part?

    ReplyDelete
  79. 1. Yes, if you don't have relevant info on your question. Please never write irrelevant stuff, you might end up irritating the examiner.

  88. Dear Shubhra Mam,

I plan to opt for psychology in prelims. I know your subject for prelim was Pub Ad. Was there any particular reason for not choosing psychology for prelims. What is the difficulty level of psychology for prelims? Is it a good choice for prelims?

    Thankyou

  89. Hi Shubhra,
I am going to appear for 2010 exam. Psychology is my one optional for mains, for which i have decided to join Mukul Pathak Sir's classes for mains. It would be of great help if you can please share - a) address of his classes and contact number from where more info can be obtained b) about when classes should start?.
Also please suggest readings for Psycho - 2nd paper.

    Thanks a lot!!

  90. Hi Shubhra,

I am planning to start preparation for CSE 2010 now. My optionals are Pub Ad (First) and Psychology (Second).

Isn't it late to start prepare for CSE 2010 (I'm in job too) or there are chances to success?

I'm thinking to start with second optional i.e. Psychology in September and would like to complete the syllabus by mid November. And then I'll start with Pub Ad (first optional) and continue with it till prelims. Simultaneously GS preparation would keep going from now till prelims.

Is this strategy OK or I can plan something better?

Since I'm in job, Would I be able to cover Psychology through Self Study from MP Sir notes (available at Jawahar Book Depot) and from the books you mentioned above?

Within how much time, one can complete Psychology's syllabus for Mains(through self study, assuming 4 hours daily)? I know it varies from individual to individual but asking a generic figure.

I'm the regular reader of your Blog and it's the most trusted source of information and guidance to me. Thanks for this.

    Best Regards,
    Rohit

    A. Well, they are the most comprehensive source on psychology. bUt I beleiev you can do all this stuff by consulting many books, which will be tedious...right?

I plan to opt for psychology in prelims. I know your subject for prelim was Pub Ad. Was there any particular reason for not choosing psychology for prelims. What is the difficulty level of psychology for prelims? Is it a good choice for prelims?

    A. I had consulted a few people and they advised against taking that as an optional as it's more technical in nature and I didn't hjave any b/g in the subject.

  105. Hi mam.
give me an advice to choose the optional either psychology or sociology.now I am pursueing B.Tech final yr with computers.
I have studied upto 10th in telugu medium.
I have decided to take pub.add as one optional.
plz help me to choose second one.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Madam, you have mentioned in one of the posts above that one needs to memorize the names of almost all the researchers, not just the important ones. My question is, are we also supposed to memorize the dates like (Urbantschitsch, 1875) ? It is a dumb question by all logical analyses but just to confirm.

  107. hi shubra
i got handwritten notes of MP.
i got two books (binded) . book1 i guess covers topics of paper 1 and 2nd binded book covers
    topics of paper 2.
if there is time problem would it be ok i read 2nd book for paper 2 as baron would cover paper 1

    ReplyDelete
  108. @coolblue
no..plz also read notes for paper 1

    ReplyDelete
  109. @vinodkumar
kindly choose optional based on ur interest and aptitude.
    @outsider
no, not all researchers, just the imp studies.

    ReplyDelete
  110. shubra

if there is time constraint , would it be sufficient to read baron and MP handwritten notes.
    would that suffice.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Madam, I think i did not phrase my question clearly last time. I wanted to ask you, if one has to remember the "YEAR" of study along with the name of the researcher or "YEAR" can be omitted.

    ReplyDelete
  112. @Coolblue,

Could you pls tell me from where you got two handwritten binded books of MP?

Actually I bought 8 binded handwritten notes (Set wise) from Jawahar Book Centre, Ber Sarai.. Cost around Rs. 950.

I am confused.. Which one is original one? Your or mine..

    Pls reply asap..

    Thanks,
    Rohit

PS: @Shubhra: If you can also comment, it would be of great help?
