  2. Hi Shubhra,
Let me start of by saying that your inputs have been fabalous,I would like one sample long answer definetly to be put up. For starters we would be able to benchmark with "the best" in the country and ofcourse consequently as you have blasted a whole slew of "coaching serving" myths this could be the final bastion.I would vouch for Pub Ad as Psychology might still have a Mukul Pathak but Pub Ad has been a field were every Tarun, Deepak and Hari have had a field day. So plz one answer to banta hai boss!!!

    regards,

    Shivanu

  4. maam i've few questions -

1)does it helps to prepare from all previous 10 years questions for mains and prelims?
2)are some questions repeated in mains and prelims ?did u practiced previous years' papers before the exam(main or prelims)?
3)should one follow 'those' huge books for GS prelims ?
4)apart from reading ncert and other books for conceptual understanding for mains in initial stage..how should one prepare especially for prelims 3-4 months before exam....does the thorough reading of those books will get us through ,for eg. for psychology if i read NCERT,Ciccarelli,Baron and pathak sir's notes..will it be enough or one has to read something extra for prelims ? that was for optionals, what in the case of GS for prelims ?

5)how did you evaluated your answers of pub ad(as no one was there to help you)

6)how frequently you practiced mock tests in 3-hour time frame and did you revised everyday what you learned a day before or you revised weekly/monthly)

maam you answers will be of immense importance and help to me
i hope everybody gain from this..

thank you very much for your unstinting support

  9. Dear Shubhra,
Congratulations for your marvelous achievements. Thank you for taking time to help other aspirants.
I am doing my bachelors from USA. I want to come back to India and do public service as a civil servant. As the committee does not entertain questions from the aspirant can you give me some idea if i am eligible for the civil services examination or not. I am an India citizen. I am just confused about my bachelors degree which i am pursuing from USA rather than India.

With your permission, my other questions are as follows.
1.How to start the preparations? In the beginning one is bombarded with information, can you suggest some thing that beginner should do in order to train himself or herself for future hard work and to get used to it.
2.What to read in News papers and magazine? Does one need to read full news paper and magazine? How much time should one ideally spend reading it? Should i make notes from newspapers and magazine?

    Thank You so much.

  14. Reverred Ma'am;

First of all, Congratulation for your success and Thanks for your writings in the blog in order to help the aspirants...

Since, one of your optionals was "Psychology", I request you to throw a light on the mode of the preperation of Psychology... How should one start especially one who is not from that background??

one question which I always wonder that People use to take the subjects which they never studied in the graduation, most of them take the papers like psychology, Pub admn, pali etc to score the marks only ..Doesn't it have a negative impact on the interview board???

I am studying law and the people are often suggesting me to take "Psychology" as an optional...

so, I would be highly obliged if You could give some suggestions as to how one should start preperation for Psychology..

You have posted wonderful tips for the preperation of Public Administration.. Kindly post the same for Psychology (for mains especially)

    Thanking You in anticipation
    Rahul.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I have posted tips for psychology in a separate post.

No, it doesn't have any adverse effect if you take optionals other than your graduation subject.
And Public adm and psychology are not taken because they are scoring. Pub ad is relevant to the future job as well as the whole exam process.

Every subject is scoring equally. UPSC makes sure of that. So please remove the notion that people take these subjects becuase they are "SCORING".

But, still have some doubt... you said,"Public admn is relevent to the future as well as the whole exam process"...A student who studies Public admn for a period of three months from the books like Maheswari, Mohit bhattacharya;would they become able to stand on the position that would help him/her to administer the public in general after becoming a civil servent????

with no offence Ma'am I believe that the civil service examination examines the capacity to mug up the things to a large extent...I might be completely wrong in my opinion...so, Ma'am i seek your opinion on this point...

  26. ma'am, i would like to get the following inputs about PSYCHOLOGY OPTIONAL for MAINS from you.

    1. you have advised the aspirants [in the post on psychology] to get the model answers to be evaluated by someone competent. for aspirants who are not into any coaching,

1.a. can u please briefly explain the various details/aspects to be found in the answers?
what,in your experience, are the details/aspects expected by the evaluators in an answer?

1.b. do the questions from DIFFERENT TOPICS [like personality, learning, memory] topics require DIFFERENT APPROACHES while answering?
can you, if possible, detailedly explain the various details/aspects to be ensured in the answers for questions from EACH TOPIC.

    2. few years back [2005], there was a question about "top down and bottom up processing in recognition" in the short notes type question. there was no material abt this topic in MP notes. there were just a few lines in baron.

2.a. so in case of such short notes questions [about which an aspirant might have insufficient information ] what would be your suggestion about answering?
2.b in case u faced such a question in ur mains, could u plz tell us how u handled the question on lesser known topic?

i am asking this query because every year UPSC seems to be surprising students with such less familiar/unknown topics in the short notes questions section.

I have opted for mathematics(I) and PubAd(II).I'm starting preparation just now.I have planned to join DIAS(neariit gate) for maths, vajiram for gs and Mr. mohanty of synergy for pub ad based on inputs from people studying there as i'm based in Faridabad
can you please allay my fears abt these insti's and teachers?
also if i don't join any coaching(as i'm short on funds)and rely solely on self study for preparation is that possible. I have just completed engg. and also decided not to join the company i got placed in to pursue this dream. can i rely totally on self study and books?

This is just an opinion that you have assumed.

  54. Dear Ma'am

    Thanx for your earlier replies..

You have posted several tips to prepare for the civil service examination especially keeping in mind the duration of preperation as one year... A large chunk of the aspirants prepare or at least think to prepare for the exam with their graduation or when they pursue any professional courses...I would be highly obliged if you will give some suggestions as how to prepare for the civil service while pursuing the current studies..

There is a strong perception among the people that one needs to devote at least one year for its coaching at Mukherjee Nagar?? Ma'am do u agree with this??? If one starts to prepare before three years how difficult will it to clear in the current year... Because, the students like us always confuse between the competitive exams and the placement from the respective college...The question which we always face that whether I should first avail the placement from the college and then should prepare during the job or should I concentrate on the civil service... so, A suggestion from your side would be highly commendable...

I would be highle obliged if you could provide any details regarding the preperation of "LAW".. or the link of anyone's blog who might be providing the details about the preperation of LAW...

  82. Hi Shubhra ,

This is Shefali.I belong to Kanpur.I would be taking the prelims in 2010. I am currently taking classes for Psychology with MP and have taken classes for PubAd simultaneously.I do not intend to take GS classes and was wondering if I would be making a mistake by going away to my hometown and preparing. I do intend to come back after the Prelims so that some sort of guidance as far as answer writing is concerned, is available. Though it is a matter of personal choice, but was wondering if I am not taking all factors into consideration while taking the decision to go away.

  83. You are making a good decision. Dont worry.

  84. Hello Ma'm,

Very Thanks for helping young aspirants!

I need your help in deciding about a second optional. I am not able chose between pub ad and geography, as syllabus of geography is too vast but many say you have to do selective study in geography. Please help me as i am too much confused about these two. Is pub ad more scoring than geography, i will be thankful to you. my second optional is Physics.

    Regards,
    Abhishek

  85. I have no idea about Geography.
Pub ad is a good choice as far as GS, Essay and Interview are concerned.

  96. Shubhra,

Would like to thank you a zillion times for the blog! Its such a fabulous initiative, and whats more laudatory is your unstinting commitment @ replying to almost every single comment!

Anyway, just needed some help on a few other topics
    1) Essays preparation - I guess its coming
    2) GS Prelims preparation tips
    3) Any sources you might know for UPSC Compulsory Hindi Q Papers? (Second Language Paper)
4)Economics & Management study material, by any chance? - My optionals
Some Qs outside the purview of Exam preparation, but nevertheless, vital I guess
1)Career of an IAS Officer - More on Job Roles, Postings, Day-to-day life, Monetary benefits etc... Lot of us are attracted by the "glamour", but personally I would also want to be really sure what I am getting into...
    2)Other careers & Roles you play - IPS,IFS,IRS etc...

    Thanks in advance,

    Kailash.N
