Hello Ma'm. Remarkable work on your language. It shows the depth of effort you have put in. Amongst the sea of ppl admiring you this is my take. Could you pl suggest me the source material for Personnel admin. Sharma and Sadana seems totally boring. And how to go about this topic as it seems very general to me.

A. I wrote mostly in Paragraphs. When time is short you can write in points.

Its nice that you are giving back something to the Aspirant Community.
I have got AIR 225 this time and hope to get IAS. I have been blogging on Current Affairs for more than a year now.

Dear Mam Again I m Jeba from Tamilnadu, I have one doubt, there is a rumour about the cancellation of optionals in prelims & main.Is it possible ? Do you have any idea on that, kindly inform me
@Jeba No idea. And I would suggest that instead of focussing on rumours, you try to study. These kind of rumours are always floating around in this exam's preparation. Even if that has to happen, I think UPSC would give enuf grace period for aspirants to be prepared for it.
removing optionals in prelims is only 2nd ARC's recommendation along with many ! but will not be implemented soon. For details of the recommendations one can refer ARC's website
Dear Mam I have read your note taking tips , Can u plz tell me is prelims too require note taking or mains only. If it requires how to take notes for prelims ?
Regarding tests series, when's d ideal time to opt 4 them? am preparing 4 next yr, but i've applied 4 them now. but as i havent completed d syllabus, i'm confused whether 2 take d tests in exam conditions or solve them as an exercise. plz help.
Dear Ma'am, First of all thanks a lot for taking the trouble to assist the IAS aspirants. I do have a query about 'Evaluative Questions'. For instance in psychology, if we were to evaluate different perspectives for a 20 marker, is it necessary to describe the perspectives as well or do we just start off with the evaluation. Thanks a ton
Describe a theory only when it says "Describe the theory". In evaluative questions, you hav eto write a summation of the theory first and then start evaluation.
Sry i din mention d test series in d prev. post. i wanted to know abt d mains test series.

ma'am, plz help to understand the difference between evaluation and critical analysis of a theory/statement.Also is critical appraisal,critical evaluation and critical analysis all different or same.
Hello mam i have doubt for few topics regarding from where to study them 1 Morale 2 Organization structure(Boards,commissions,etc) 3 in OB in topics like motivation,leadership many theories are given contemporary portion should i study all of them or focus on imp ones
Morale-sharma sadana I didn't study these topics. In OB, theories like Maslow, Herzberg are the traditional ones. Other than them you should also study Porter lawler, Vroom's expectancy theory, equity theory, attribution theory etc.
Hello ma'am, First of all ,many congratulations! I am Saket, B.Tech 2nd Year from IIT R. Recently , only , I found your reply on one of the threads at orkut of IIT R and the link to this blog of yours.Seriously ma'am,it really brings a sense of great pride to have one of our alumni as IAS topper... many congratulations from me. And its really further inspiring of you to start of with such a novel blog to help others.
Ma'am,meanwhile, just I thought that you would be the exactly right person to guide me through a doubt of mine which has been brewing in my mind since past one year. Actually , ma'am , I come from a modest background and have always aspired of doing something good to my society...and given that its my priority even over personal comforts,gains,fame etc.
I am pursuing Computer Sci. & most of my well wishers suggest me that I make a career in this discipline and try to help society thru monetary or whichever means at a later stage , as against go for civil services which is as per common word of mouth opinion is not welcoming for sincere and dedicated officers,leading to possibly lesser job satisfactions.
Ma'am, is it really true? Because,for an IT guy to choose civil services would mean an irreversible choice, staking his entire professional qualifications.. Ma'am ,as you have closely perceived both aspects of - working in an IT-company and then finally joining civil services, I look up to you for your kind advice.
@Saket I haven't yet joined the srvices, so can't predict how easy or difficult it's going to be for me.
And it is definitely possible to serve the country in a different capacity than as a civil servant. But it becomes possible to serve a larger community and on a geeater scale through the medium of civil services.
You will have to clarify your priorities yourself. Even if I suggest you to pursue a career in IT/computers or otherwise, you will have to discover the answer to this dilemma yourself.

Hi Ma'm, You are going to help students for PubAd for 10 days. I desperately wanted to join you but due to some unavoidable reasons won't be able to. My request is that you arrange some material comprising of your lectures so that we can avail that material to help ourselves. I haven't joined any PubAd class so i would be looking forward to something of this sort.
Ma'am from where can I get the IIPA journals ? and do we need the lastest ones or old ones ? IS there any internet link from where we can get the e-notes for IIPA ?
hi mam, i have done self study of GS ..& i would like to join some good coaching institute for GS ..can u please suggest me some good institute(s).. i know u dont endorse any institute but your suggestion might save my money and time ...i have heard that vajiram&ravi , shriram are both good for GS. if these arent good then please do mention the good ones ..thanx mam ,
hello mam. congratulations for the great success. i am glad to have topper awith pub.ad. as optional. as i was looking for the person who can guide me and help me out. mam, as i have choosen pub.ad. as my 1st option,and i am preparing for 2010 attempt. pleasd guide me about this subject, as i have start with 1. mohit bhattacharya 2. rajni goyal 3. d.d basu which basic books i can refer to read sothat i would be able to clear the concepta and learn them. thanks ®ards neeraj
If only the IAS toppers before you had exposed the Pub Admn and GS of Vajiram, me and my friends would have done better- atleast saved money ! We are average people who need coaching to improve. But Vajiram made coaching into a disadvantage. Thanks for saving the present and future batches.
Ma'am, i come from Banglore. Previous to that i was working in Chennai. In both the places i happened to go to Civil coaching. Now i am in New Delhi(Noida really). I have joined GS classes ( Not the Vajiram which many people are cursing here). I feel there is a world of difference. Here, the standards are so enlightening. So much professionalism. I have nt joined for Pub ad here as many people confirmed to me that self-study is the best and coaching is `a disadvantage' as some one put it. Thanks for saving me Rs.20k. Regards , Ramasundaram
Hello Madam, Can you tell how many pages do we need write in the essay paper (with good content). Since its for 200 marks, I dont have any idea of how long it should be. How long(pages) you had written? Thanks, Manju
Hi Shubhra Ma'm, my last request before you start your classes for PubAd. Please do sth for the people who can't avail of your classes. I/We will be highly thankful to you. Any kind of audio lessons or notes of what you will be covering can help us a lot.
Thank you for replying to my queries. I had one question again, but it is a peculiar one.
I had given prelims for 2008 as I said. I did not clear, for which you suggested some strategies for prep in your blog.
Ma'am, I am facing the problem now that I have studied the whole syllabus completely I am not able to understand where to start all over again. Every topic I read, it seems that I have already read it and feel complacent about it. Could you suggest some strategy for this to avoid this ? For example, I was reading Delegated legislation, but it feels that I have already read and don't feel like reading it. Please suggest something for overcoming this problem.
I did not know the relevant post for this questions and I posted here as I felt this is most appropriate. I hope you wouldn't mind.
thank you mam for all your guidance. mam,are yojna and kurukshetra important and unavoidable?are they monthly or weekly?and when is the exact time of the year one should buy them.i am preparing for 2010 prelims. pls guide me.i will be very grateful.
if you don't get time to read these 2, just buy yojana. Just keep yojana with you and when you feel like suplementing any topic , just pick the magazine up.
I would suggest you to please buy Yojana regularly. It comes monthly. It helps in Essay also.
hello mam i am a student of btech 3rd year (ece) my ultimate goal is IAS is it the right option for me to prepare for IAS after btech?or doing mba 0r mtech is better one but my ultimate goal is IAS
mam,thank you for continuing to answer my queries.when should i buy india year book,or manorama year book.do u suggest yearbooks mam?if yes then then which one?and which portions of it i should cover?pls ans my query.thankyou once again.
I didn't consult Manorama Year Book. But I did consult some chapters of IYB. I am not aware of the curr pattern of q paper . So I won't advise you not to give up on year books.
Hi Ma'am, Your blog has been a great source of knowledge and inspiration for my preparation. It would be great if you could throw some light on the 'eagerly-awaited' Essay preparation post.
hello mam,how r u.mam, i am studying 8-10hrs 6 days a week for the past one month.i want to continue studing but i feel disinterested due to this long duration study .so i have not studied much today.mam did u ever feel the same.what u use to do to break monotony?what do u suggest me?
@John Take regular breaks Listen to nice music to relax yourself. Treat yourself when you have finished a work load. go for positive visualisation(fantasize about success)
hello mam. as the vajiram's batches for pre cum mains-2010 is going to start and enrollment for them has been started. should i enroll myself for the coaching or i can prepare better w/o coaching with the help of your guidance ofcourse and previous notes of vajiram and other material u suggest already.. or should i take postal order of their notes?
Hi Ma'am, I have done B.E in Electronics and comnication engg.Now i am confused with the selection of objects. Pls suggest whether i should go for engg. subjects(ex.Electrical engg. and maths)or go for Arts subjects(if yes then which combination is more scoring). Kindly advice me as i can't start my preparation untill i get rid of this confusion.
Hello ma'am. I am a third year Btech student in IIT-Roorkee. I have never wanted to be in Civil-Services, because I never ever thought about it. Right now also, my knowledge of current affairs in an absolute zero to such an extent, that I know nothing much about Parliament, or Politics, etc etc.. But, I want to explore this area. I want to know about Civil Services. I am trying to explore carreer options, but this Civil Services is a MYSTERIOUS one!! My interests are: I like communicating with people, I like to imagine, I like to speak up, I like to write, and I have started liking reading, and now I have begun to think about current affairs as well... Please tell me this: What questions i must ask myself, before starting out to prepare for Civil Services? I know it is great to be in it, but WHY MUST I CHOSE IT? How can one know if his interest in Civil Services is bonafide, or it is just because being an IAS officer brings a lot of pride and power...
Please try to understand what I tried to convey. I am a beginner. I dont want to start up on a journey without knowing why am I doing it. Also, one very important fact: I read your interview, and I was like, CLUELSSS about those extra-ordinary questions pannel asked you. I read AIR-2 topper interview, and I felt like I can never clear IAS EVER EVER !! But is that just a general feeling EVERY aspirant gets before starting? Or is it that I am very very hopeless with my poor knowledge and awareness and aptitude?? Please reply !! Regards, Shubham.
@Shubham yes, this is the general feeling every aspirant gets when they start. First decide why you want to join civil services. Then start your preparation.
hi mam,i m in a confusing state whether i should prepare for civil services or not.Currently i m doing b.tech(IT) and not interested in it.due to some problems i m here...now i want to clear the civil services exam...i m good at maths...............can u guide m so that i can fulfil my dream....................respect ur regards.....reply soon

Hi Shubra. Can u guide us about revision and the timelines u followed for that. When did u start revising or did u do it periodically?
ReplyDeleteCovering of whole syllabus is more important or covering of maximum syllabus and consolidation with more revisions?
Hello Ma'm.
ReplyDeleteRemarkable work on your language.

Can u guide us about revision and the timelines u followed for that. When did u start revising or did u do it periodically?
Covering of whole syllabus is more important or covering of maximum syllabus and consolidation with more revisions?
A. Well, I did periodic revisions as well as consolidated revisions towards the end. Both are important.
I covered whole syllabus for all subjects.
Dear Mam
ReplyDeleteAgain I m Jeba from Tamilnadu, I have one doubt, there is a rumour about the cancellation of optionals in prelims & main.Is it possible ? Do you have any idea on that, kindly inform me
Thanks & Regards
J.Jeba
@Jeba
ReplyDeleteNo idea.
ReplyDeleteDear Mam
ReplyDeleteI have read your note taking tips , Can u plz tell me is prelims too require note taking or mains only. If it requires how to take notes for prelims ?
Thanks & Regards

ReplyDeleteplease post queries in relevant thread.
Dear Ma'am,
ReplyDeleteRegarding tests series, when's d ideal time to opt 4 them? am preparing 4 next yr, but i've applied 4 them now. but as i havent completed d syllabus, i'm confused whether 2 take d tests in exam conditions or solve them as an exercise. plz help.
mam,should i make notes and then memorize or should i take notes ,right relavant answer and then memorize?
ReplyDeletehow many hours does one to study on daily basis?is one day off in a week recommended mam
ReplyDeleteregards mano
Dear Ma'am,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all thanks a lot for taking the trouble to assist the IAS aspirants.
I do have a query about 'Evaluative Questions'. For instance in psychology, if we were to evaluate different perspectives for a 20 marker, is it necessary to describe the perspectives as well or do we just start off with the evaluation.
Thanks a ton
Kayina
@Mano
ReplyDeletePlease develop your style of studies on your own. There is no cut and dried method that I can suggest to you.
@twinkle
ReplyDeletewhich test series, prelims or mains/
In evaluative questions, you have to give positives, negatives and then conclude.
ReplyDeleteDescribe a theory only when it says "Describe the theory". In evaluative questions, you hav eto write a summation of the theory first and then start evaluation.
ReplyDeleteDear Ma'am,
ReplyDeleteSry i din mention d test series in d prev. post. i wanted to know abt d mains test series.
Regarding tests series, when's d ideal time to opt 4 them? am preparing 4 next yr, but i've applied 4 them now. but as i havent completed d syllabus, i'm confused whether 2 take d tests in exam conditions or solve them as an exercise. plz help.
Regards,
twinkle
ma'am,
ReplyDeleteplz help to understand the difference between evaluation and critical analysis of a theory/statement.Also is critical appraisal,critical evaluation and critical analysis all different or same.
@Twinkle
ReplyDeleteThe testseries is more useful only when you have finished the syllabus on which you are taking the test.
Evaluation and critically analyse etc. arre almost the same.
ReplyDeleteYou have to give positives, negatives and then a conclusion based on the generally held opinion.
Hello mam
ReplyDeletei have doubt for few topics regarding from where
to study them
1 Morale
2 Organization structure(Boards,commissions,etc)
3 in OB in topics like motivation,leadership many theories are given contemporary portion should i study all of them or focus on imp ones
Morale-sharma sadana
ReplyDeleteI didn't study these topics.
In OB, theories like Maslow, Herzberg are the traditional ones. Other than them you should also study Porter lawler, Vroom's expectancy theory, equity theory, attribution theory etc.
Hello ma'am,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all ,many congratulations!
Regards,
Saket
@Saket
ReplyDeleteI haven't yet joined the srvices, so can't predict how easy or difficult it's going to be for me.
All the best!
hi Ma'am! CONGRATULATIONS on this great achievement.. Ma'am, i would lik 2 kno hw u presented general essay in the xam. was it a conventional descriptive plain essay or with each aspect under a separate sub-heading, including charts etc? approx word-limit?

ReplyDeleteHi Ma'm,
ReplyDeleteYou are going to help students for PubAd for 10 days. I desperately wanted to join you but due to some unavoidable reasons won't be able to. My request is that you arrange some material comprising of your lectures so that we can avail that material to help ourselves. I haven't joined any PubAd class so i would be looking forward to something of this sort.
Thanks in advance.

@N
ReplyDeleteI have given sources in a separate post.
@avinash
ReplyDeleteI am not aware of any good coaching inst for GS. Please consult other students regarding the same.
@PuneetGhai
ReplyDeleteYou can buy the compilation of journals from xerox shop next to vajiram and also from Bersarai Jawahar book shop.
hello mam.
ReplyDeletethanks a lot mam.
mam, please tell me from where i can get the ignou notes and which part of pub. ad. it covers?
thanks & regards
If only the IAS toppers before you had exposed the Pub Admn and GS of Vajiram, me and my friends would have done better- atleast saved money ! We are average people who need coaching to improve. But Vajiram made coaching into a disadvantage. Thanks for saving the present and future batches.
ReplyDeletemam,should I read the newspaper A-Z or some selective portions.if selective portions then which portions are more relevent for this exam?
ReplyDeleteEditorial, economy section, international, national.
ReplyDeletemam
ReplyDeleteplease tell me about the ignou notes and iipa journal.
thanks & regards.
Please go thru the blog. you will get ur answers.
ReplyDeletethanks mam
ReplyDeleteand sorry that i have asked the same question twice.
thank you mam for all this guidance.u r sparing ur precious time for us. m sure u ll get a lot of blessings for wht u r doing.
ReplyDeletejust another query.did u read mag or newspaper articles over and over or just one time?does one need to revise them?
ReplyDelete?
@John
ReplyDeletejust one time. And if I found something useful I used to cut it and keep it in a file.
ReplyDeleteI have nt joined for Pub ad here as many people confirmed to me that self-study is the best and coaching is `a disadvantage' as some one put it.
Thanks for saving me Rs.20k. Regards , Ramasundaram
Hello Madam,
ReplyDeleteCan you tell how many pages do we need write in the essay paper (with good content). Since its for 200 marks, I dont have any idea of how long it should be. How long(pages) you had written?
Thanks,
Manju

ReplyDeleteHello madam,
ReplyDeleteI am final yr student from IIT Kharagpur preparing for CSE - 2010 and taking Economics as my 2nd optional along with chem as the first one.
Can u suggest me about books and study material along with strategy for covering the economics syllabus for mains.
Can u also suggest which coaching institutes notes (if any ) will be useful for my prep of economics.
Eagerly waiting for your reply,
Best Wishes,
Sachin Prakash
Please go through the entire blog before posting questions. I have repeatedly said that except pub ad and psychology, I can't help.
ReplyDeleteHi Shubhra Ma'm, my last request before you start your classes for PubAd. Please do sth for the people who can't avail of your classes. I/We will be highly thankful to you. Any kind of audio lessons or notes of what you will be covering can help us a lot.
ReplyDeleteRegards.
Hello Shubhra Ma'am,
ReplyDeleteThank you for replying to my queries.
Thanks in advance, waiting for your reply.
Bharat
If you have understood the whole syllabus, start making synoptic notes for mains, and factual notes for prelims. That will keep you going.
ReplyDeletealso start wnswer writing and get ans evaluated by a teacher so that you can get feedback. that will increase ur motivation.
thank you mam for all your guidance. mam,are yojna and kurukshetra important and unavoidable?are they monthly or weekly?and when is the exact time of the year one should buy them.i am preparing for 2010 prelims. pls guide me.i will be very grateful.
ReplyDeleteif you don't get time to read these 2, just buy yojana. Just keep yojana with you and when you feel like suplementing any topic , just pick the magazine up.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest you to please buy Yojana regularly. It comes monthly. It helps in Essay also.

mam,thank you for continuing to answer my queries.when should i buy india year book,or manorama year book.do u suggest yearbooks mam?if yes then then which one?and which portions of it i should cover?pls ans my query.thankyou once again.
ReplyDeleteI didn't consult Manorama Year Book. But I did consult some chapters of IYB. I am not aware of the curr pattern of q paper . So I won't advise you not to give up on year books.
ReplyDeleteHi Ma'am,
ReplyDeleteYour blog has been a great source of knowledge and inspiration for my preparation.
It would be great if you could throw some light on the 'eagerly-awaited' Essay preparation post.

ReplyDeleteI am really tired of answering this question. Please look up the blog to get your answer.
@anisha
Plz go thru the post on optional selection. That will help you.
Mam,
ReplyDeleteWill you please reveal your daily routine, while studying for IAS.
Hello ma'am.
ReplyDeleteI am a third year Btech student in IIT-Roorkee.
My interests are:
I like communicating with people, I like to imagine, I like to speak up, I like to write, and I have started liking reading, and now I have begun to think about current affairs as well...
Please tell me this:
What questions i must ask myself, before starting out to prepare for Civil Services?
I know it is great to be in it, but WHY MUST I CHOSE IT? How can one know if his interest in Civil Services is bonafide, or it is just because being an IAS officer brings a lot of pride and power...
Please try to understand what I tried to convey. I am a beginner. I dont want to start up on a journey without knowing why am I doing it.
Also, one very important fact:
I read your interview, and I was like, CLUELSSS about those extra-ordinary questions pannel asked you.
I read AIR-2 topper interview, and I felt like I can never clear IAS EVER EVER !!
But is that just a general feeling EVERY aspirant gets before starting? Or is it that I am very very hopeless with my poor knowledge and awareness and aptitude??
Please reply !!
Regards,
Shubham.
@Shubham
ReplyDeleteyes, this is the general feeling every aspirant gets when they start. First decide why you want to join civil services. Then start your preparation.
I am looking forward for the day when i can become an inspiration to IAS aspirants just like Shubra mam - Vicky
ReplyDeletehi mam,i m in a confusing state whether i should prepare for civil services or not.Currently i m doing b.tech(IT) and not interested in it.due to some problems i m here...now i want to clear the civil services exam...i m good at maths...............can u guide m so that i can fulfil my dream....................respect ur regards.....reply soon
