For Psychology, Mr. Mukul Pathak is the only one. I believe almost every student of Psychology in CS preparation avails of his guidance in one form or another. I have immensely benefited from being his student and he is more than just a teacher. He has been a mentor and friend too. I am not suggesting that every student should join his classes. But this is one of the ways I can thank him for his invaluable support and guidance.

Mr. Mukul Pathak's class notes.
1.Focus on conceptual understanding.
2.All chapters of paper 1 are extremely important and interlinked. So do not leave any unit.
3.Practice answer writing in the prescribed time limit and try to get them evaluated by someone competent.
4.Make synoptical notes for every topic for easy reference. That helps in the final revision.
5.For paper 2, you need to use some daily life examples and put them in your answer.
Also try to add some theoretical aspects of paper 1.
Thanks.
First of all, congrats for the achievement...after reading your blog,i am more happy that such a person became the topper. Many people after clearing fail to communicate clearly what they actually done to the new aspirants and some even confuse others. You are doing a great job by writing this blog.

ReplyDeleteThanx...
I got my answers evaluated by Mr Pathak only. To supplement Pathak Sir's notes, I looked up internet resources and standard textbooks.
ReplyDeleteShubhra,
ReplyDeleteCongrats and best wishes from my side for your future endeavors.
Could you give an examples for this "For paper 2, you need to use some daily life examples and put them in your answer"? A short one which you used as part of your strategy.
Also, please tell me how to prepare and present answers for essay.
Thanks for your time.

Also please guide me regarding ESSAY ...and may be a few tips on interview

ReplyDeleteyou can buy notes of pathak sir's from any shop in delhi. Also, please study from Ciccarelli, Baron and NCERTs. Conceptual clarity is a must. I will try to scan sm answers for you.
ReplyDeleteDaily life examples would be something like:
In Gender psychology, you have a topic called Glass ceiling. Instead of giving examples in US, try to give from your own country.
Compare the % of women in Politics and admn. The see how many women actually are at Chief Secy and Cabinet secy level. Also how many women get imp cabinet ministries. All they get is women and child devt and tourism.
I hope you get the point.
Thanks.

As i stay in hyderabad, there is no much quality coaching available for psychology but i am really very much interested in the subject.
I have got vajiram's main material for psychology. But i am not sure if this is same as Mukul Pathak's notes. If not, can you please let me know where i can get this notes.
It should be the same. There are no other notes for psychology by vajiram.
ReplyDeleteThanks Shubhra for your reply.
ReplyDeleteI have few more queries. The first one is in regard to coaching for psychology. I have some basic understanding about psychology. I want to know if coaching is indispensable for securing good marks in psychology.
When i have gone through the mains material, i found lots of information regarding experiments. Do we need to remember all these information(regd experiments) for mains preparation. Can you help us in knowing what sort of preparation is need for securing good marks in psychology

ReplyDeleteyou can prepare w/o coaching, but please do buy Mr pathak's notes. They will really help.
Hi Shubhra,
ReplyDeleteFor the psychology books reference, you have mentioned below.
NCERT 11th & 12th

When I searched for Ciccarelli, there are many books with this name, Please can you specify exact books title and publication
Thanks
Manju
well, i dont remember that name. it's a black coloured book. Maybe someone here can help me?
ReplyDeletehi Sravani,
ReplyDeletecan you pls tell me the shop where you have bought Mr. Mukul Pathak's notes, in Hyderabad. I initially refrained from buying it, as i thought its illegal and a civil services aspirant should not do that... but its practically not possible ( i love my job in recession :) ) for me to attend the coaching classes and i've read posts of many students of Mr. Pathak, some toppers, publicly suggesting to buy Mukul Pathak sir's notes.... doesn't Mr. Pathak know about it, i guess he does, but i respect him for not restricting aspirants by applying the law
thanks

ReplyDelete"Representational knowledge .....neuorocognitive studies of amnesia.."...
its hard to sometimes appreciate what is required(in the examination conditions specially) if one has a wee less than thorough understanding of the topic....
See, you have answered the question yourself. You should have covered the topic memory well to actually appreciate this question. i attempted this questions because I had studied the topic from 3 books, wikipedia and MP notes. Only when you get a good grasp of the subject, you can answer such questions.
**********************************************
And please tell us how did you find the anger management question...(please share something about it)
I did not attempt the question because I found other questions better.
************************************************
And lastly please suggest some standard textbook for Memory.(preferably paperback)
Ciccarelli, Baron, NCERT

ma'am since u have directed to post psychology questions in Psychology post, im posting these queries again here...
ReplyDeleteyou have advised the aspirants to get the model answers to be evaluated by someone competent. for aspirants who are not into any coaching,
1. can u please briefly explain the various details/aspects to be found in the answers?
what,in your experience, are the details/aspects expected by the evaluators in an answer?
2. do the questions from DIFFERENT TOPICS [like personality, learning, memory] require DIFFERENT APPROACHES while answering?
can you, if possible, detailedly explain the various details/aspects to be ensured in the answers for questions from EACH TOPIC.
thanks.
1. can u please briefly explain the various details/aspects to be found in the answers?
ReplyDeletewhat,in your experience, are the details/aspects expected by the evaluators in an answer?
First you need to study the demand of the question. Make a framework of the answer. Write an introduction that is relevant to the question. In the body write as many aspects of the answer as possible. Write a conclusion which mirrors the answer buy doesnt repeat the introduction.
2. do the questions from DIFFERENT TOPICS [like personality, learning, memory] require DIFFERENT APPROACHES while answering?
A. No, no diff in approach required.
can you, if possible, detailedly explain the various details/aspects to be ensured in the answers for questions from EACH TOPIC.
A. That's difficult. Can't do that.
few years back [2005], there was a question about "top down and bottom up processing in recognition" in the short notes type question. there was no material abt this topic in MP notes. there were just a few lines in baron.
ReplyDelete-----------------------------------------------
if answer to the above question can be gist of following paras or not(requesting to read all the paras and need ur view)
A top-down approach is essentially breaking down a system to gain insight into its compositional sub-systems. In a top-down approach an overview of the system is first formulated, specifying but not detailing any first-level subsystems. Each subsystem is then refined in yet greater detail, sometimes in many additional subsystem levels, until the entire specification is reduced to base elements
A bottom-up approach is piecing together systems to give rise to grander systems, thus making the original systems sub-systems of the emergent system. In a bottom-up approach the individual base elements of the system are first specified in great detail. These elements are then linked together to form larger subsystems, which then in turn are linked, sometimes in many levels, until a complete top-level system is formed. This strategy often resembles a "seed" model, whereby the beginnings are small but eventually grow in complexity and completeness
The study of visual attention provides an example. If your attention is drawn to a flower in a field, it may be simply that the flower is more visually salient than the surrounding field. The information that caused you to attend to the flower came to you in a bottom-up fashion — your attention was not contingent upon knowledge of the flower; the outside stimulus was sufficient on its own.
Contrast this situation with one in which you are looking for a flower. You have a representation of what you are looking for. When you see the object you are looking for, it is salient. This is an example of the use of top-down information.
In cognitive terms, two thinking approaches are distinguished. "Top down" (or "big chunk") is stereotypically the visionary, or the person who sees the larger picture and overview. Such people focus on the big picture and from that derive the details to support it. "Bottom up" (or "small chunk") cognition is akin to focusing on the detail primarily, rather than the landscape. The expression "seeing the wood for the trees" references the two styles of cognition.
This is not the full explanation of top down and bottom up.
ReplyDeleteTop down and bottom up processing is also linked with memory and personality attributes. Then there are certain experiments that were conducted. You need to add them as well.
Also it would require some input from learning.
Part-whole learning -bottom up
whole -part learning-top down
Get Mr Pathak's class notes from your frnds. It is explained very well there.
mam hav no frnd taking or taken coaching at pathak sir's class.if any market whr his class notes are available.if vajirao postal guidence psychology books r diffrnt frm his notes

ReplyDeleteYou can buy written notes from jawahar book depot at bersarai.
ReplyDeleteMam I am writing to you about how i answered Mains 2008 paper, there are some queries attached to it ...Please suggest the needful corrections...thanks a ton
ReplyDelete----------
(Explain Bandura's theory using a suitable social learning task. Extend research support to your answer.)
In the above mentioned question what research support can be mentioned or were mentioned by you.
-------------------------
(Give a comparative account of self as conceived by Adler and Rogers.)
In this answer I first explained self in about 100-150 words ...
totality of individual's experiences, core of personality , subjective and objective etc
Then i wrote that adler is a post freudian whose approach seeks to integrate various approaches and roger's approach is humanistic
Then i briefly explained adlers theory by writing concepts of striving for superiority , style of life and creative power of self(120 words).
Then i explianed roger's notion of self with concepts like tendency for self actualisation, congruence between real and ideal self and unconditional positive regard etc.
in next para i highlighted similarities in both like
1) emphasis on conscious ability to direct the course of development of our self
2) ultimate goal being the complete development and fullfilment of self in the concepts of superiority and self actualisation
In next para I explained differences in basic motivational force and the roots of development of self and Roger being positive and adler being conflict-based.
Then i concluded by highlighting their unique importance in psychology in general.
(ARE THEIR MORE POINTS TO THIS ANSWER???...BECAUSE I THINK I DID NOT MENTION ENOUGH NUMBER OF DIFFERNCES AS REQUIRED BY THE QUESTION)
(Explain Bandura's theory using a suitable social learning task. Extend research support to your answer.)
ReplyDeleteIn the above mentioned question what research support can be mentioned or were mentioned by you.
************************************************
Bandura's Bobo doll expt is the biggest research evidence. I think I meantioned 2 more but now I can't recall.
(Give a comparative account of self as conceived by Adler and Rogers.)
ReplyDeleteyour frameworks is good. But a few more point could be written. like Adler's conception of self is a negative one while rogers' is a positive one.
also, adler's self tries to overcome sense of inferiority while rogers' is an innate striving for self actualisation.
also, you digressed from the question in introduction and conclusion. you need to remember the question at all times.
Sub:regarding the availability of handwritten class notes of sir)
ReplyDeleteMa'am Iv tried at Jawahar Book Depot...

I think if you put this query in aspirants interaction page, someone will help you.
ReplyDeletehello shubra
ReplyDeletewhat is the difference between printed notes
and written notes of mukhul patak
does both have same content. did u happen to see
both of them.
yes i had both.
ReplyDeleteThey are different. Written notes are written in class and much better than printed notes.
Ma'am
ReplyDeleteCould you please tell me the name of the book for initial reading...The one which can be read for conceptual understanding of the Psychology by a beginner...
I have just started to read "INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY" by Morgan , King, Weisz and Schopler (Tata-Mcgraw Hill Edition)...It would be an immense help for me if you could suggest whether to go with this book or the books (NCERT text book and others) you suggested in your previous posts...
Thanx in anticipation..
Regards
Rahul...
maam i'm sorry for posting in wrong topic earlier..it feels woeful that you ask people to post under correct topic..and i don't want to be one of them..
ReplyDeletemaam my question is same, you said that you covered a lots of books for different topics but maam the books you mentioned in psychology tips are just baron and ciccareli and given the time constraint do one has to go through (in psychology)these books perfectly or read many books ..i mean is it good to do few books thoroughly or read many books ..did you went through other than the books mentioned in psychology ...
thank you
these books+NCERTs+ Mr Pathak's notes. That's all
ReplyDeleteMam,
ReplyDeleteCan you please suggest as to how the mains answers for pyschology should be.
Eg: Differentiate between iconic and echoic memory.
I was not able to answer it for 20 marks question as there are not many differences that i can point out.
Can you please tell me how i should go about answering such questions.
If you go through Mr Pathak's notes, you will find this stuff in Memory chapter. Last year this part was separately added, so you can also find this in new notes that Mr Pathak gave for new syllabus separately.
ReplyDeleteI did not answer this question as it is very straight. Not much to analyze. Plus, I felt that everyone would be writing what I would write. So not much scope for scoring.
hi mam
ReplyDeletecongratulations 4 ur wonderful result.....i hav taken psychology as my first option n hav started prep(with help of coaching raus ias study circle)but im in great delima to select second option which one would be more scroing 4 me either pub ad or sociology(i have done my graduation in biotechnology)

Ma'am plz help...
ReplyDeletecan we in anyway use the concepts proposed by Elizabeth Loftus to contradict Tulving's conceptualization of semantic and episodic (memories) being dissociable sub-systems within the LTM.
I mean did she ever say anything to conradict the gentleman.
As far as I know she talked about false memories, memory reconstruction etc. I never came across the fact that she tried to contradict Tulving's hypothesis about episodic and sumantic memories.
ReplyDeleteThanks a ton Ma'am.
ReplyDeletemam..
ReplyDeletei want to know hw to deal with so many scientists/authors/researchers.in psychology.with prelims pt of view.....

ReplyDeleteSorry no idea.
Hi mam,
ReplyDeleteI am now studying with ncert text books.Do we need to take notes from these books,Or just have it for a conceptual clarity.I am just studying it line by line and this takes time. Can i just have a brief study and move to the main books.
mam,
ReplyDeleteWhat i have meant above is for Psychology my 2nd optional.
Well NCERTs are mainly for conceptual clarity. But some part of it can be taken down as notes, the stuff you might not find in Baron or ciccarelli. Like Concept of self in Indian tradition, sufi tradition.
ReplyDeleteOk mam,i had been taking notes from these ncert books unit wise all these days.from now i will check to out with Ncert and baron and prepare accordingly. Thanks for your reply.
ReplyDeletehello mam
ReplyDeleteDid you refer Robert A. baron as baron or there
is some other name
and second
how do i prepare notes from Baron I am bit confused.
Yes, I think Robert A Baron is the one.
ReplyDeleteMa'am,
ReplyDeleteQ1. can wwe write shorter answers for 60 marks if we cannot think of more stuff relevant to the question? Will it be better than writing stuff that's only remotely relevant to the question?
Q2. From where should I attempt questions?
Q3. How do we judge the relative weightage of various parts of a question? How many words to be written for each part?
1. Yes, if you don't have relevant info on your question. Please never write irrelevant stuff, you might end up irritating the examiner.
ReplyDelete2. Buy a question bank.
3.weightage depends on the relative content of the topic in question.
Thanks a lot Ma'am. Kindly keep up the great work. Thanks a lot once again.
ReplyDeleteMam...iz coaching for psycology inevitable ???
ReplyDeletecan i rely on my self study...........i hve mukul pathak sir's classroom notes....plzz reply.
Yes you can rely on self study.
ReplyDeleteMaam can u say where i can get Mr.Pathaks Notes.. I live outside Delhi in TN
ReplyDeleteYou can call Jawahar book depot. They send notes thru post also.
ReplyDeleteRegards!
ReplyDeletemaam i have got a lot of answers without posting any queries. Thanks for useful blog.
Madam,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all thanks for the guidance. Can you tell me where i can fully solved Q&A's of the previous 4-5 years? I am a bit nervous given the nature of the questions being asked? Thanks.
I have no idea about that. Trust me, no solved papers in market are good.
ReplyDeletehello mam,can you please suggest an alternative to Mr Mukul Pathak's Notes,as i am not able to find them anywhere ! One thing more,Are they really essential or few books will suffice..?
ReplyDeleteDear Shubhra Mam,
ReplyDeleteI plan to opt for psychology in prelims. I know your subject for prelim was Pub Ad. Was there any particular reason for not choosing psychology for prelims. What is the difficulty level of psychology for prelims? Is it a good choice for prelims?
Thankyou
Hi Shubhra,
ReplyDeleteI am going to appear for 2010 exam. Psychology is my one optional for mains, for which i have decided to join Mukul Pathak Sir's classes for mains. It would be of great help if you can please share - a) address of his classes and contact number from where more info can be obtained b) about when classes should start?.
Also please suggest readings for Psycho - 2nd paper.
Thanks a lot!!
Hi Shubhra,
ReplyDeleteI am planning to start preparation for CSE 2010 now. My optionals are Pub Ad (First) and Psychology (Second).
Isn't it late to start prepare for CSE 2010 (I'm in job too) or there are chances to success?
I'm thinking to start with second optional i.e. Psychology in September and would like to complete the syllabus by mid November. And then I'll start with Pub Ad (first optional) and continue with it till prelims. Simultaneously GS preparation would keep going from now till prelims.
Is this strategy OK or I can plan something better?
Since I'm in job, Would I be able to cover Psychology through Self Study from MP Sir notes (available at Jawahar Book Depot) and from the books you mentioned above?
Within how much time, one can complete Psychology's syllabus for Mains(through self study, assuming 4 hours daily)? I know it varies from individual to individual but asking a generic figure.
I'm the regular reader of your Blog and it's the most trusted source of information and guidance to me. Thanks for this.
Best Regards,
Rohit

ReplyDeleteA. Well, they are the most comprehensive source on psychology. bUt I beleiev you can do all this stuff by consulting many books, which will be tedious...right?

I plan to opt for psychology in prelims. I know your subject for prelim was Pub Ad. Was there any particular reason for not choosing psychology for prelims. What is the difficulty level of psychology for prelims? Is it a good choice for prelims?
A. I had consulted a few people and they advised against taking that as an optional as it's more technical in nature and I didn't hjave any b/g in the subject.

dear madam, congratulations!this is Naresh Ram from Chennai. I am from a poor family so i cant join any institution kindly guide me. I am going to appear in 2010. my optional is public administration kindly help me in this regards.
ReplyDeleteyeah..it will be,for sure ! well then how can i find all the material related to Mr. Mukul Pathak's classes that will supplement my preparations for the concerned subject ? Nowhere am i able to find the notes.what to do..?After ur emphasis on the notes,i am not confident of cracking the exam with psychology without studying those notes..Help !
ReplyDeletemaam..i've a query regarding examples which are to be used in answers in cse..maam is it okay to give an example which is very common and used by all like in case of field experiment robber's cave exp. or should one find new examples ?
ReplyDeletealso in 'grounded theory takes a case rather than variable perspective'... in this ques. i understand ground theory focuses on cases to gather data for the basis of theories it gives but what about variable perspective....can you pls explain the question and what will be the good points to include..
thank you very much and i hope you have a good time in mussoorie,i wish you could share some of your experiences with us :)
@naresh
ReplyDeleteYou will find the blog helpful in this regard. Kindly go to the right side of the blog and read other articles as well. That should give you a fair idea about the exam.
@Vikas
ReplyDeleteYes you can give general examplesif they ar relevant. Ususally one expt covers more than one area of psycho.
Please do not ask me to explain a certain topic. That will get really difficult for me.
@Vaibhav
ReplyDeleteI never said the notes are indispensable. Yo can prep w/o them also.
And please post such questions in aspirant interaction page.
hello maam...finally i somehow managed to arrange MP notes. What i got is a HUGE Bundle of handwritten material.Plz tell me whether each n every page of the material holds equal importance or few things can be omitted,as the time is very less now.Plz Guide,i have psycho for my prelims too.
ReplyDeleteu haven't got the class notes...
ReplyDeleteMadam,
ReplyDeleteFollowing are the details of the book "Ciccarelli"
Title : "Psychology"

ReplyDeleteMam Hello...
ReplyDeleteI m confused on which books to refer for psychology paper1 and 2.I read the blog but u have specified various books can u please advise like u did for pub admn i.e mohit bhattacharya for paper1 and arora goel for paper 2.i need to cover maximum topics from just 2 textbooks so that rest i can refer thro Mukul pathak sirs class notes..
Thank u mam..
Hi mam.
ReplyDeletegive me an advice to choose the optional either psychology or sociology.now I am pursueing B.Tech final yr with computers.
I have studied upto 10th in telugu medium.
I have decided to take pub.add as one optional.
plz help me to choose second one.
Madam, you have mentioned in one of the posts above that one needs to memorize the names of almost all the researchers, not just the important ones. My question is, are we also supposed to memorize the dates like (Urbantschitsch, 1875) ? It is a dumb question by all logical analyses but just to confirm.
ReplyDeletehi shubra
ReplyDeletei got handwritten notes of MP.
i got two books (binded) . book1 i guess covers topics of paper 1 and 2nd binded book covers
topics of paper 2.
if there is time problem would it be ok i read 2nd book for paper 2 as baron would cover paper 1
@coolblue
ReplyDeleteno..plz also read notes for paper 1
@rahul
ReplyDeletei hv given the sources..
@vinodkumar
ReplyDeletekindly choose optional based on ur interest and aptitude.
@outsider
no, not all researchers, just the imp studies.
shubra
ReplyDeleteif there is time constraint , would it be sufficient to read baron and MP handwritten notes.
would that suffice.
@coolblue
ReplyDeleteyes that should
Madam, I think i did not phrase my question clearly last time. I wanted to ask you, if one has to remember the "YEAR" of study along with the name of the researcher or "YEAR" can be omitted.
ReplyDelete@Coolblue,
ReplyDeleteCould you pls tell me from where you got two handwritten binded books of MP?
Actually I bought 8 binded handwritten notes (Set wise) from Jawahar Book Centre, Ber Sarai.. Cost around Rs. 950.
I am confused.. Which one is original one? Your or mine..
Pls reply asap..
Thanks,
Rohit
PS: @Shubhra: If you can also comment, it would be of great help?
@outsider
ReplyDeleteyear not imp
hello mam,I am already doing what you say.According to you how much time it should take to complete the course of gs and 1st optional.optional is pub ad.
ReplyDeleteIs every question of previous papers is needed to solve for mains because I understand many aspects of the subject and now solving the papers.
No need to solve all questions...just have a framework in mind and see if you can solve the question.
ReplyDeletetime is dependent on ur study style and time devoted everyday
maam how useful is to include flow charts ?did you use them in any of your optionals?
ReplyDeleteMam, When did you start preparing for Psychology. Before prelims or after that. When did you join classes at Pathak sir?
ReplyDeleteThankyou
after prelims.
ReplyDeleteflowcharts are useful...if placed in a relevant and meaningful manner.
hello mam ......first of all thnx for ur blog help..i hv gone thru entire blog n dis is enlightening....u hv mentioned the sources as NCERTs , baron, Ciccarelli and MP class notes .mam my question is that do we need to read all topics from all sources ,line by line :( ?
ReplyDeleten did make ur own notes extracted from other all sources or were selective in making notes of few topics and MP notes for others?
also wat ws the order ? first NCERTs than MPs notes etc.?
sorry ...i know too many ques... bt for clarity in prep i need ur guidance plz
thnx a ton !
can u suggest any book for paper 2??
ReplyDeletethanks for your blog...
